Wow.
I'm back in LA and am still processing my experience at Camp Bob.
First and foremost, I want to compliment ALL of the staff for the amazing work witnessed while in camp. The time there was one of the most challenging things I've done in my adult life and, having now lived it, I can appreciate the physical, emotional, and mental investments the counselors have made in the kids attending this year and in the past. I saw so many acts of kindness, empathy, enthusiasm, and leadership that I can't recount them all, but everyone deserves a standing ovation for their work and support.
Camp Bob has recruited and maintained an incredible group of people, which, in these turbulent times of self-interest, is especially remarkable. Especially since the work is so challenging.
A special shout-out to Mr. Ethan and Mr. Tyler, who welcomed me into the Cabin 5 chaos with open hearts and allowed me to feel like I contributed to the whole. Our group's dynamic required constant intervention, correction, and encouragement, and both counselors were up to the task.
One of the things I discovered was how much the boys LOVED being read to. I would not have guessed how much they would respond to stories, but despite sometimes voting against having one, once it began, they quieted down and listened.
Having had the responsibility of producing some large events over my life, I can appreciate the Herculean effort and coordination needed to pull off a successful camp like this. I really admire the incredible leadership displayed, from problem-solving to crowd control to counselor and volunteer guidance. This is something to be VERY proud of.
With love,
js
